Northwood High School junior Janessa Hensrud won First Place in the “Poetry Out Loud Championship” state competition on March 18 in Bismarck. She competed along with 14 other students selected from different regions in North Dakota.
After 3 rounds of competition, Janessa was selected as the winner of the state of North Dakota. And not only did she win a cash prize and money for her school library, she won an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the National Poetry Out Loud Championship on April 27.
She was accompanied to the state finals in Bismarck by her dad Iver Hensrud, mother Sarah Braun and grandmother Nancy Hensrud. Janessa’s name and school will be engraved on the state trophy and displayed at Northwood High School throughout the next year.
