 New Free Module on the Digital Classroom

The Newseum Institute is excited to announce the launch of “Making a Change,” a new free module for teachers and students on the Newseum Digital Classroom! With this module, you can explore the civil rights movement through a new lens: the role of the First Amendment in facilitating change. Delve into the role of the five freedoms in this key chapter of U.S. history through unique interactives, hundreds of primary sources from the Newseum collection and beyond, and opportunities for students to create and share the fruits of their explorations on the Digital Classroom. Module features include:

  • An interactive timeline featuring more than 200 historical front pages and photographs, and 40 archival newsreels and interviews.
  • media map comparing newspapers’ front page coverage of six key civil rights events.
  • A gallery of multimedia panels showcasing contemporary civil rights issues, powered by GlogsterEDU.
  • Three opportunities for students to submit their work for display on the Digital Classroom. Students can showcase historical and contemporary civil rights activism in their communities through original timeline entries, media map reports and Glogster panels.
  • Nine standards-aligned lesson plans that support historical thinking, media literacy and civic engagement.
